Re: pets

About a year and a half after we lost Palmer we decided it was time to get another dog. It was a bit tough for me as he still grieved for Palmer and felt a bit guilty for "replacing" him.
We had decided to look for a german shephard, a species I always had a weakness for. Took awhile as many breeders were asking in the thousand dollar range for a purebred but eventually we found a farm family about an hour from us that were not breeders, but owned a male and female as family pets and watchdogs. They were advertising puppies on kijiji so we decided to make the call and go see them. Well be were instantly hooked when we saw the litter of 10 pups. It was a little odd as the male parent wasn't huge but the mom was very large, and 100% black. We actually thought the mom was the dad when we saw the photos in the ad. Anyways it was pretty difficult to pick one but after half an hour of playing in the pen we decided on one. The owners put a tiny collar on him as he was still too young to leave his mother. On the drive home we decided on a name, Rider (after the Saskatchewan Roughriders).
It was a month later when we went back to pick him up. This is him after a couple days in his new home....

After a year he is still quite willing to bond on the couch...

He's almost 2 now. Still a pup in his mind and much more interested in chasing a ball than being any sort of watchdog. He loves everybody.
He has also really taken to water, and won't hesitate to fetch a ball or come out for a swom with us up at the cabin. Here he is around 8 months.

The spca in Prince Albert owns and operates a great kennel. When we have to leave him that is where he goes. He actually runs to the front door when we get there and it is obvious the staff treat the animals like their own. Although after living in our new house for 6 months now we have neighbors on one side and across the back alley that have both "demanded" that they will take care of him anytime we need.
