When we go away for a night or 2, our neighbors take care of our pets. They take them out, feed them, medicine (if needed at the time) and treats. We do the same for them when they go away for a few days.
We boarded the dogs ONCE at a place like Doctoro mentioned. With 3 dogs, it was damn near $600 to board them for a week and we still had to have someone come to the house at least once a day to take care of the cats.
The dogs came home from the "doggy day care" neurotic, smelly and I could tell they did NOT enjoy their time. My Springer Spaniel would come home missing all the fur on his head from running in and out of the flap door, inside-outside, inside-outside, repeat that 100 times a day for 5-7 days.
Once we started extending our trips to 10 days, I have my best friend since high school come and stay at the house. She takes care of the dogs and cats. We feel comfortable having someone at the house while we are away. We pay her $300, half the cost of boarding. She is happy to do it, it pays her share of her rent for 2 months.
I also leave a notarized letter in case of pet emergencies. It states what vets to go to, how much to spend in medical costs and who to contact if a decision needs to be made regarding stopping medical care and putting the pet to sleep. My mom has final say if anything REALLY bad happens. I hope that never happens while I'm away but my mom is the best person I can think of to handle that situation.
